Testimony of the Heavens: God's Redemptive Plan Preserved in the Stars, by Dana Sherstad

As you work through this thirteen-week Bible study, you will learn how “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Ps 19:1 – KJV). You will see how they boldly proclaim far more than God’s awesome creative ability; they proclaim His redemptive promises in great detail, bringing glory to Him. The Testimony of the Heavens uses both scriptural and historical evidence to show that the constellations were first used by prophets before the written Word to teach the glorious message of God’s redemptive plan for mankind. The account of the bruised Hero who crushes the head of the enemy (Genesis 3:15), among other prophecies, have been perverted by astrology and myths of more recent cultures. The original stories found in the 48 constellations are examined in the light of God’s written revelation. You will be amazed as you search the numerous references to the constellations in the Bible and learn how the constellations match the biblical truth you already know. In the same way that Christ is found on every page of Scripture, the revelation of His person, work, and promises can be found in every corner of the sky. Your faith will be strengthened by this Bible study of God’s magnificence, power, and loving kindness as He displays His promises to us in the great dome of the sky. Beautiful illustrations of the ancient constellations have been integrated with this study of Scripture, engaging your visual senses with the art of the heavens. Testimony of the Heavens is approved curriculum for home Bible studies at Canyon Hills Community Church, Bothell, Washington. The Rev. Mark G. Barrett, M.Div., Canyon Hills School of Ministry, states, “One of my favorite verses in all the Bible is Psalm 19:1 ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.’ I have raised my children to understand that God’s glory is not only found in divine Scripture but also in natural revelation. Sherstad and Barbich’s work puts feet to that truth! I found their book to be an insightful, enjoyable study that is very well documented biblically. It will open the readers’ eyes to the incalculableness of God’s cosmic prophetic capabilities in time and space.” Author Dana Sherstad and collaborator B.J. Barbich live with their families in beautiful Washington State. Both graduated with AA degrees from Grace Bible College, Grand Rapids, MI, and have a passion for the Word of God. Stirred by E. W. Bullinger’s book, Witness of the Stars, they greatly expanded the concepts from Bullinger’s work, teaching the material to small study groups. They were led by the Lord to develop this study further and make it available to a wider audience. Together they set out on the journey which has culminated in this Bible study.

Degas and the Little Dancer, by Mr. Richard Kendall

Degas's sculpture of the Little Dancer Aged Fourteen is one of the most celebrated images of our age. Although it caused immediate controversy when first exhibited in 1881, it is now recognized as the sculptural masterpiece of Impressionism. After the artist's death, the Original wax was reproduced in at least thirty plaster and bronze casts that are now scattered throughout the world and inspire delight among museum-goers and continuing debate among art historians.

This beautiful book is the first full-length study of the subject and offers entirely new perspectives on a work that is widely regarded as a key precursor of twentieth-century sculpture. In three chapters, Richard Kendall analyzes the origins of this distinctive figure in Degas's ballet imagery; explores the condition of French sculpture in the 1870s and the significance of Degas's choice of materials, procedures, and exhibition strategy; and describes the critical responses to the first public display of the statuette, particularly those comparing it with dolls and the art of ancient Egypt. Douglas W. Druick then explores the fascinating association between the sculpture and views of criminality current in the artist's day, and for the first time in the history of the work, Arthur Beale examines the technical character of its variant forms using laboratory analysis and X-ray photography. The book presents sixty-five color plates of major works by Degas that encompass the genesis and legacy of the Little Dancer, as well as a wealth of comparative plates and preparatory drawings, some never before published.

The book is the catalogue for an exhibition that will open at the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, in February 1998 andthen travel to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass., and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Read the story of Christ's birth from a whole new vantage point...from the viewpoint of Heaven. The Birth is the third in the series. The Chronicles of heaven written by the beloved storyteller Gene Edwards.

The Birth has become the most popular rendering of the Bethlehem story. The drama begins in the eternals. Just before the birth of John the Baptist, the skies had turned to brass. Michael and Lucifer battle in an unforgettable duel, as Michael rips open the brass to allow the prayers of Elizabeth to ascend to the throne. From that point on, the story never lets up. An edge-of-your-seat saga of the Christmas story like you have never read!

The Birth gives us insight into the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, a glance into the eternals, and a full revealing of God's eternal purpose as disclosed in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Not Like the Usual Story
By M. S. Harrsion
This is a terrific story, placed in a prospective where characters come to life that you knew existed in the lives of the main characters but never came to know until Gene Edwards brought them to life in story. It is like seeing God's plan come into fruition before your eyes. Even a small child can comprehend the awesomeness of God as it is being read to them. It brings relationships between people into view that are so natural and normal that it makes you feel you are a part of story, like a friend standing right there in the midst of all the events. Mr. Edwards carrys an anointing that most good writers can't even imagine exist.

Inspiring!
By Dottie Parish
The Birth tells the story of the birth of Christ from heaven’s perspective. This is a fascinating short but powerful book about the events of the incarnation – the invasion of God into human form as the baby Jesus. We discover the excited and significant roles the angels played as they realized something new was about to happen and they are instructed to be messengers to Mary and Joseph and then to appear to the shepherds. The story is told in historical sequence and shows the concerns of Joseph and Mary as well as their delight in the many affirmations of Jesus divinity. His divinity is confirmed by the angels, the shepherds, the Kings and the prophets in the temple. This is a delightful book that could be read to grade school children at Christmas as well as enjoyed by adults.

Amazing Birth
By Sharon Wadlow
I have read this series years before and gave it away to pass on to others.... it's worth the read again. So, I am very happy to have found the entire series on Amazon!
Gene Edwards is a master story teller and it's easy to believe what he writes as true.... or could be. The angels' words, actions and emotions are so belivable. I love the way Gene Edwards writes, all his books are so vital.

Samuel Morris (1854–1937) treats the visions as a series of concurrent panoramas of the church age, each with a specific focus, calculated to bring consolation to believers. Being Christ's final message to the world the book has a distinctive evangelistic message too.

This edition has been completely re-typeset.

Good overview of Revelations
By Roger Marks
The premise of the book is found in a quote from Professor William Milligan of Scotland, who suggested, "The Revelation of St. John consisted of a series of visions, each in the form of a panorama, not occurring in historic succession, but as repetitions of the same events in entirely new settings from different angles, each having a a distinctive object in the various presentations." Morris does a good job of explaining this method of interpreting the Book of Revelation. Another good book that explains this view is More than Conquerors by William Hendricksen.

Who Wrote the Book of Life?: A History of the Genetic Code (Writing Science), by Lily Kay

This is a detailed history of one of the most important and dramatic episodes in modern science, recounted from the novel vantage point of the dawn of the information age and its impact on representations of nature, heredity, and society. Drawing on archives, published sources, and interviews, the author situates work on the genetic code (1953-70) within the history of life science, the rise of communication technosciences (cybernetics, information theory, and computers), the intersection of molecular biology with cryptanalysis and linguistics, and the social history of postwar Europe and the United States.

Kay draws out the historical specificity in the process by which the central biological problem of DNA-based protein synthesis came to be metaphorically represented as an information code and a writing technology—and consequently as a “book of life.” This molecular writing and reading is part of the cultural production of the Nuclear Age, its power amplified by the centuries-old theistic resonance of the “book of life” metaphor. Yet, as the author points out, these are just metaphors: analogies, not ontologies. Necessary and productive as they have been, they have their epistemological limitations. Deploying analyses of language, cryptology, and information theory, the author persuasively argues that, technically speaking, the genetic code is not a code, DNA is not a language, and the genome is not an information system (objections voiced by experts as early as the 1950s).

Thus her historical reconstruction and analyses also serve as a critique of the new genomic biopower. Genomic textuality has become a fact of life, a metaphor literalized, she claims, as human genome projects promise new levels of control over life through the meta-level of information: control of the word (the DNA sequences) and its editing and rewriting. But the author shows how the humbling limits of these scriptural metaphors also pose a challenge to the textual and material mastery of the genomic “book of life.”

"The entire book is fascinating and well written, unfolding more as a grand epic of the ways in which scientists work and think, rather than as a standard philosophical or historical treatise. The book is also an invaluable resource due to its exhaustive notes and reference sections. Highly recommended for all interested readers, undergraduates and up."—Choice

A valuable account of how the genetic code was discovered.
By David C. Bossard
This is a valuable historical account of how the genetic code was discovered, written by a person who revels in historical details. What a sadness that the author, Dr. Lily E. Kay passed away in 2000: such a talented writer; too soon, far too young. See the Wikipedia entry about her, especially the wonderful video which gives real insights into how she "reconstructs" history. In that video, she says, "I do not think that any one actor [probably including herself - hmsc] in a historical account has the privileged Archimedean vantage point from which to tell 'the true story.'... [B]e content with an imperfect grasp of events and actors, even of nature."

So, she invites us to read her reconstruction with a bit of reserve. But granting that, and the likelihood of occasional slights, oversights and outright errors, I found the discussion fascinating. My only real objection is that it is too long ("too many notes" as Mozart was famously told). I would love to see a book on the same subject, updated to the present, engagingly written, but only half as long.

The book describes just how the universal genetic code encapsulated in dna, was discovered. The puzzle was to explain how a long sequence of just 4 nucleotides could specify the generation and folding of proteins based on 20 amino acids. The final solution - a (nearly) universal coding in which combinations of 3 nucleotides determine the amino acids - was found in the 1960s, and Dr. Kay discribes the push to this discovery as a frenetic race between many competing interests. I particularly like her description of how some of the discoveries were made -- although some of the details were still left out: in this regard, Craig Venter's book, A Life Decoded: My Genome - My Life is a bit more satisfying because it goes into more of the details that I find interesting -- but perhaps his was a somewhat simpler (!) task.

The start of the book discusses the information theoretical underpinnings that (perhaps) prepared the way for the discovery of the genetic code, but, unless I missed it in my reading, I hoped for but did not find a comparable theorical discussion of the actual code after the complete picture was put in place. I would have liked to see something on the chemical necessity or contingency of the resulting code, and of the role of the occasional code redundancy, use in error correction, more on the concept of a "primitive" doublet code as a precursor to the triplet code, etc. Also, something on the occasional deviations from the "universal" code table (either use of amino acids outside of the standard 20, or occasional use of a different coding scheme).

But in the end, this is an excellent book -- and deserves a well-written, shorter companion that perhaps emphasizes less the personalities involved and gives a somewhat more complete and up to date account. I recommend it to anyone who is curious about how the "central dogma" of biology was discovered.

Health Care Finance Review
By Beverly M. Garner
Initially,I was impressed with the condition of the textbook; but unfortunately after a couple of weeks, the binding of the text started to unravel. Not sure if this status quo for today's manufacturing process, but certainly disheartening considering that I paid close to retail price. I've decided that in the future, I will either rent or purchase used. Just for the record, I am a lover of books and am careful in my handling. Aside from that particular issue the experience with Amazon books.com has been good. This is not my first purchase and it will not be my last.

About the Author
Born in Edinburgh in 1906, the son of the city's Director of Education, John Innes Mackintosh Stewart wrote a highly successful series of mystery stories under the pseudonym Michael Innes. Innes was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he was presented with the Matthew Arnold Memorial Prize and named a Bishop Frazer's scholar. After graduation he went to Vienna, to study Freudian psychoanalysis for a year and following his first book, an edition of Florio's translation of Montaigne, was offered a lectureship at the University of Leeds. In 1932 he married Margaret Hardwick, a doctor, and they subsequently had five children including Angus, also a novelist. The year 1936 saw Innes as Professor of English at the University of Adelaide, during which tenure he wrote his first mystery story, 'Death at the President's Lodging'. With his second, 'Hamlet Revenge', Innes firmly established his reputation as a highly entertaining and cultivated writer. After the end of World War II, Innes returned to the UK and spent two years at Queen's University, Belfast where in 1949 he wrote the 'Journeying Boy', a novel notable for the richly comedic use of an Irish setting. He then settled down as a Reader in English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford, from which he retired in 1973. His most famous character is 'John Appleby', who inspired a penchant for donnish detective fiction that lasts to this day. Innes's other well-known character is 'Honeybath', the painter and rather reluctant detective, who first appeared in 1975 in 'The Mysterious Commission'. The last novel, 'Appleby and the Ospreys', was published in 1986, some eight years before his death in 1994. 'A master - he constructs a plot that twists and turns like an electric eel: it gives you shock upon shock and you cannot let go.' - Times Literary Supplement.

More farce than bloodshed
By ealovitt
Sir John Appleby, lately retired from Scotland Yard is tapped to give a speech at a mystery writers' dinner club in London, the 'Diner Dupin,' at which he is briefly introduced to Priscilla Pringle, author of such titles as "Poison at the Parsonage" and "Revenge at the Rectory." Miss Pringle's friend, a romance author attempts to get Priscilla to tell Sir John of a disturbing incident on the train into London, but Miss Pringle shies off. Appleby is left with only a confused memory of the meeting:

"'The magenta one was anxious that the salmon-pink one should tell me some interesting anecdote.' Appleby just perceptibly hesitated. 'There was to be a railway journey in it, and a retired soldier. But the salmon-pink one rather shut the other one up.'"

Little does Appleby know that he will encounter Miss Pringle and her mysterious retired soldier, deep in darkest Wiltshire, in a case involving blackmail, various unsavoury goings-on, and possibly even murder.

All of Michael Innes' Appleby mysteries abound with eccentric (although highly literate) characters and some of the novels, such as "Appleby's Answer" tend more toward farce than bloodshed. This author takes stock characters from the British mystery genre and twists them just a bit out of true: the horse-crazy country gentry; the genteel, middle-aged authoress of shocking mysteries; and a couple of British school boys, who could have been plucked from "Lord of the Flies."

Appleby's long-suffering wife, Judith makes fun of her husband's propensity to involve himself in the criminal affairs of mere acquaintances:

"'John's answers to such problems are invariably correct. It was a saying, as a matter of fact, at Scotland Yard.' Outrageous invention was occasionally one of Judith's amusements. '"Appleby's Answer," they used to say. It became proverbial.'"

Michael Innes (John Innes Mackintosh Stewart) was born in Edinburgh, educated at Oxford, and taught English in universities all over the world. His scholarly career includes works on Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, but he is better known as the creator of Inspector John Appleby, whose exploits inspired a lasting vogue for literary (and literate) mysteries.

Child of the Sun: Psychic & Physical Rejuvenation in Alchemy and Qabala (IHS Study Guides Series) (Volume 3), by Mark Stavish, Alfred DeSt

Child of the Sun is a comprehensive text on the effects of spagyrics, alchemy, and qabala on the psychic and physical bodies. Written in clear and precise language, the theory and practice of psychic and physical rejuvenation is presented so that both the specialist and beginner can understand how to undertake these unique practices. Child of the Sun breaks new ground by presenting highly specialized material on the Seventy-Two Angels of the Great Name and how to contact them using a ritual from the French Martinist tradition; the importance of Dream Yoga, or Lucid Dreaming in the rejuvenation process; the use of spagyric tinctures as well as mineral alchemy; a little known experiment with antimony; uses of the Middle Pillar exercise in physical and psychic health; the role of blood in personal transformation; and more. The material presented here is not a literary creation or academic theory, but has been demonstrated by those who have undertaken their practice. Child of the Sun is a true friend and guide to students of the Hermetic Arts and Sciences, and all who undertake the Great Work.

Startling

Startling

In a word, startling. I am familiar with Mr Stavish's work and esotericism in general both east and west. Even being relatively well read and practiced I find myself startled by the breadth of information, the integration of the presentation and the challenge and promise of the Work within Children of the Sun. One great strength of the book is the specificity. The methods supplied are very specific with specific stated outcomes. These outcomes are, much like the siddhis, indications of progress on the the Path rather than the Path itself. Often functioning as a comparative study of methodologies the text still manages to avoid jargon and self reference. This lack of jargon only can come from understanding and practice, both of which the author demonstrates. The work of spiritual self creation is discussed, outlined and placed in grand historical context. The text is a link in the great chain of tradition that all true seekers will place themselves.
There are many new insights, or at least new to the general public as these teachings are normally hidden from public view. The excercises on the angel work of the Shem seem clear and intriguing often undoing decades if not centuries of obfuscation. The correspondences of the psychic centers across traditions alone is worth the cost of the text. The examination of blood is cogent and magically important and clarifies a great many misperceptions arising from some left hand practitioners. There is almost a "rescuing" of blood from a major mistaken deviation in tradition. All of this and much more are openly discussed.
Importantly, the information is woven together with a curriculum of practice. There is a sense of timeliness and cultivation of the awareness of the realities of this passing life. One is left with the possiblity of attaining and its challenge. As the author states, "...to shock you out of the complacency that delays your actions, obstructs your thoughts, and keeps you in a state of ignorance and self-delusion."(p.183) There is a time limit to our stay here. Like a contemporary Regardie' the author opens the gates and lays the tools at our feet and challenges us to pick them up and to work. Often I am struck with a sense of having arrived at this party too late, as if I could have or should have done more earlier. When this absurdity passes I realize how grateful I am to have these tools at all in this life. They are available in this text both you and I today. Ora et labor

More intermediate-to-advanced level know-how packed into this book than in any ten popular "how-tos" on the shelves.
By Nicholas Graham
Ok, for anyone who does not own it yet, this book is seriously amazing. Just freaking buy it already.

The first thing I should mention is that this particular volume assumes that you already have at least one of what we might call Mark Stavish's "trilogy" already, whether it be The Path of Alchemy: Energetic Healing & the World of Natural Magic (Pathways to Enlightenment), Kabbalah for Health & Wellness, or Between the Gates: Lucid Dreaming, Astral Projection, and the Body of Light in Western Esotericism, or at least study and practice methods similar to what you'll find therein. Child of the Sun works to supplement any of them, and so requires some knowledge of Hermetic Qabala, qabalistic magic, and alchemy going in.

I would call this an intermediate-to-advanced book. Stavish does not teach herein any of the fundamental techniques or ideas involved, but presents loosely connected essays, musings, and pointers on going more deeply and really applying what one has learned. This book represents a full engagement with the Path of Return or Reintegration and it makes significant demands on the reader. Though I practice mostly Eastern modalities, there is a great deal in this book which was able to tie-in and even clarify certain points for me.

How are secrets like these allowed to be published?
By Alexander Berry
When speaking about modern masterpieces of esoteric literature, Mark Stavish's book “Between the Gates” without a doubt deserves to be part of the conversation. To me that book certainly "got the ball rolling" in terms of disseminating normally secretive energetic body and transformative practices to the masses. But Child of the Sun picks up that ball and slam dunks it with such command that it shatters the glass and pulls the net to the ground with blistering authority. "Masterpiece" doesn't even begin to describe this Work.

Child of the Sun is a monumental contribution to the Hermetic Tradition. The sequencing between chapters and the layering of practices is unlike anything I have previously encountered. A lot of books hint at or point to these advance practices but don't actually give them out explicitly in plain English. What is on offer here is obtainable for the price of a decent meal--this would have been inconceivable at an earlier time in human history.

In this wonderful book the secrets of Physical and Spiritual Alchemy (as well as some gems of knowledge concerning Laboratory Alchemy) are revealed. Each chapter reveals practical work--meditations, visualizations and techniques to rejuvenate body and mind. A great deal of this work finds parallels in the Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism in which the Rainbow Body is achieved. This Rainbow Body is nothing less than an indestructible spiritual body that becomes one's vehicle and assurance of survival beyond this life and into the next. Numerous books discuss this same phenomena from a Vajrayana perspective however, they do not divulge the methods as they are considered the highest and most secret teachings. Here, all the methods are given. It really is quite astounding what this book contains.

Buy this book and practice the methods inside and you will experience the most profound personal growth and change. If you do you will never be the same.
