A little gem of a book: great as a holiday gift for yourself...or others!

I'm not usually drawn to books that are "inspirational," but I spotted this National Geographic book at a holiday gift fair and was immediately drawn to its sunny cover. Once I opened it, I was completely hooked: each page features a gorgeous Geographic photo paired with a well-chosen quote from a notable person. If you have only a brief moment in your day to stop and be inspired, this book allows you to do that. Turn to any single page and you'll be, as the cover states, uplifted. But trust me: you'll want to settle down with a cup of coffee or tea and page through this little gem of a book for awhile, to remind you of how much beauty and wisdom there is in our world. And, of course, it's great to support a nonprofit as worthy as National Geographic.

Truly beautiful photography and thought provoking succinct quotations. I have been waking up to the news and found myself upset about matters I cannot undo and people I cannot comfort. Waking up now to music and this fine inspiring book gives me a fresh perspective. I began this November, the end of the year and I think it could be picked up on any day. A treasure I hope others will enjoy too.

Needs disclaimer of not being "interactive"

I like the book and the way it is broken into sections with activities and questions as student goes along. BUT....it says Interactive (on the book and in the product description) and there is a website in the book where it tells the student to go. Unfortunately, being a homeschooler and even if you buy the book we can not get a code at this time. This was not anywhere in the description. There needs to be a disclaimer, like this one that I found on another website as I was looking to buy a code: 'Homeschoolers, Please Note: The student workbook refers to videos and online components that are part of the "digital path," a student science website. Pearson does not include a student access code for this website and its content with this kit, nor is it sold for homeschool use at this time.-----Christianbook.com" I probably would have skipped the book if I had known we could not have access to the online material. Also, not a big fan of the evolution theory but can teach and then correct.

About the Author

Aaron T. Woland, CCIE No. 20113, is a principal engineer within Cisco’s technical marketing organization and works with Cisco’s largest customers all over the world. His primary job responsibilities include secure access and identity deployments with ISE,

solution enhancements, standards development, and futures. Aaron joined Cisco in 2005 and is currently a member of numerous security advisory boards and standards body working groups. Prior to joining Cisco, Aaron spent 12 years as a consultant and technical trainer. His areas of expertise include network and host security architecture and implementation, regulatory compliance, virtualization, as well as route-switch and wireless. Technology is certainly his passion, and Aaron currently has two patents in pending status with the United States Patent and Trade Office. Aaron is the author of the Cisco ISE for BYOD and Secure Unified Access book (Cisco Press) and many published whitepapers and design guides. Aaron is one of the first six members of the Hall of Fame for Distinguished Speakers at Cisco Live and is a security columnist for Network World, where he blogs on all things related to identity. Kevin Redmon is the youngest of 12 siblings and was born in Marion, Ohio. Since joining Cisco in October 2000, Kevin has worked closely with several Cisco design organizations; as a firewall/VPN customer support engineer with the Cisco Technical Assistant Center; as a systems test engineer in BYOD Smart Solutions Group; and now as a systems test engineer in the IoT Vertical Solutions Group in RTP, NC with a focus on the connected transportation systems. Besides co-authoring this book with Aaron Woland, Kevin is also the author of the Cisco Press Video Series titled Cisco Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Networking LiveLessons. He has a bachelor of science in computer engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a master of science in information security from East Carolina University, as well as several Cisco certifications. Kevin enjoys presenting on network security-related topics and Cisco’s latest solutions. He has presented several times at Cisco Live, focusing on network security-related topics and has achieved the honor of Distinguished Speaker. Kevin enjoys innovating new ideas to keep his mind fresh and currently has a patent listed with the United States Patent and Trade Office. He spends his free time relaxing with his wife, Sonya, and little girl, Melody, in Durham, North Carolina.

Best Cisco Certification Book I've read!

I am already CCNA (2 books), CCNP R&S (4 books), CCDA (1 book), CCDP (1 book) and CCNA Security (1 book) certified. The reason why I'm bringing this number is because CCNP Sec SISAS 300-208 was the best Cisco Cert book I've read!

#1 - it is fun... the book is very engaging and the flow of the reading is reeeeeeally smooth!
#2 - fun is not enough! The CONTENT of the book is really easy to understand, yet crucial for passing the Cert.

I've passed my exam today and basically all I used was the book with a Lab (ISE 1.2 + 3560-E switch + PC) to practice.

This will cover most of what's on the exam

This covers about 85% of what the certification exam covers. There are other Cisco products that this book does not reference or cover that are on the exam. In fairness to the author, some of these other things aren't listed on the exam topics either.

Good stuff!

This book is great - covers all the topics needed for the exam, I like how Aaron throws in some jabs and jokes in the book, if you like security topics then this will keep you going. Took the exam today and did very well main study source was this book and some prior experience with ISE, lots of good stuff in this book!

Excellent!!

This is one of the best books I have read this year. It is both funny and touching by turns - and the writer has captured the trials and tribulations of adolescence to perfection.
You will come to genuinely care for the feisty heroine as she sets out on the bumpy road to womanhood and you will find yourself closing the book with a sigh of mingled satisfaction at a well-told tale - and regret that it is finished.
If you have to choose any book, make it this one. You won't regret it!!

A heroine for eveyone

Heroines.
Female protagonists, if you prefer.
Being a guy I can't think of that many off the top of my head. If I had to name three, second and third place would go to Emma Peel (of TV fame, Diana Rigg of "The Avengers") and Wonder Woman (of comic book fame).
Lizzy McMann would top my list.
So who's Lizzy McMann? Like the other choices on my list, she's a fighter, a strong spirit who doesn't give in to adversity. But unlike Emma Peel or Wonder Woman, she doesn't possess any extraordinary talents - well, outside of dogged determination and a wicked sense of humor.
Lizzy is the heroine/female protagonist of Bonnie Shimko's novel, "Letters in the Attic." She's caught between being an adult - acting as a mother to her mother - and being an adolescent, trying to fit in with her peers, dealing with feelings of love for the first time.
Shimko has done a great job of making Lizzy a real person, a character with depth. Beating up bad guys becomes boring after a while; even an overgrown adolescent such as yours truly needs more in characterization and conflict. (Sorry, Mrs. Peel and WW, but you couldn't cut half of the adversity that Lizzy faces.)
"Letters in the Attic" is an impressive debut novel that many readers will enjoy. Lizzy McMann is a heroine for everyone.

a wonderful read

Bonnie Shimko has mastered the art of storytelling in her Letters in the Attic. The well-paced novel introduces us to a feisty heroine and involves us in the varied relationships she has with the other characters.
I immediately connected with the characters, especially 12-year-old Lizzy. Lizzy is the girl all of us wish we could be (or could have been), displaying a maturity and dignity level beyond her young years. Additionally, Lizzy's biting wit comes alive in the dialogue. I haven't love a storybook heroine that much since Jo in Little Women.
Letters in the Attic is an engaging, quick read. It would be a great discussion starter for parents and teens. I recommend it to anyone who remembers what it is like being an adolescent.
