Good textbook for class on Mangrove & Seagrass Ecology

I've taken or served as teaching assistant for classes on mangrove & seagrass ecology, and we've never had a good, comprehensive textbook that was suitable for undergraduate students. Thus, I was happy to find this book in time for me to teach my own class on "Ecology of Reefs, Mangroves, and Seagrasses". We've read a number of the chapters on mangrove & seagrass biology, communities, and human impacts. I didn't like the chapter on community ecology (Ch. 4) as much as the others, so I supplemented the book with chapters from Marine Community Ecology. My other main complaint about the book is that Hogarth writes relatively little about seagrasses and seagrass communities in order to concentrate on mangroves. It's obvious that Hogarth is a mangrove ecologist (and that the book is based on a previous book in the series on only mangroves) and I'm guessing he studies crabs, from the 10 pages on mangrove crabs. However, it is well-organized information, clear, and relatively up-to-date. I would use it as a textbook if/when I teach the class again and recommend the series to others teaching about the biology of habitats. We also used Sheppard et al's (2009) book in this series on coral reefs.

Good science

I took this book out of a vacation spot library, and was very pleasantly surprised. It is good, careful science nicely presented. The focus is on questions, the answers or possible answers, and the evidence. It covers the entire ecology of mangrove areas, including flora and fauna. Surprisingly, the term mangrove refers to plants which do well in tidal, brackish area, and covers a wide range of species and even families. Not just the plants, but the fauna exhibit convergent evolution; thus, there are even two species of shrimp which spend their lives on trees above the water line in the mangroves. Some other interesting facts: young tadpoles are vegetarians, whereas frogs are totally carnivorous. Some epiphytes get a significant portion of their nutrients from ant droppings.

There are parallel chapters on sea grasses and mangroves, but I did not have time to read the sea grass chapters.

In its third edition, the book has been brought up to date in the light of recent conflicts, especially the occupation of Iraq by allied forces in the period 2003-04, the more recent judgments and opinions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, the comprehensive work of the International Committee of the Red Cross with regard to customary international humanitarian law and the meaning of 'direct participation in hostilities', the Harvard University air and missile warfare project, the San Remo Manual on non-international armed conflicts, the UK Law of Armed Conflict Manual of 2004 and several excellent monographs.

Written by a former military lawyer, the book will be of interest to military commanders, their staff and legal advisers but also to officials in Foreign and Defence Ministries and non governmental agencies working in conflict situations, as well as staff of international courts and tribunals dealing with war crimes. Previous editions have been recommended reading for students of international law at many universities in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Countdown to 2012 - Heaven or Hell?

This is the third book by Lynn Grabhorn in the trilogy, "Excuse Me, .... * and " Dear God.....".

In this book, Lynn talks specifically about the end results after the earth changes predicted after 2012, when the Mayan calendar comes to an end. The future that she sees is not a very pleasant one for all dwellers on the planet. It is very much like Judgement Day, threshing the chaff (those with a lower frequency) from the grain (those with a higher frequency), with the grain going to Heaven and the chaff to Hell, kind of stuff. However, most of the book deals with what Heaven (Planet Two) will be like. The portion that deals with this is in a fast read question answer format. Some of the questions taken up are as follows: 'Will my friends and family make it?', 'Will I get a job there?', 'How does the economy work?' and so on. She also provides essential information as to how one can get there.

The language is in Lynn's characteristically racy style, but even more unrefined than usual. It is obvious that the material had been proffered to her from a more advanced source, to be disseminated among her fellow human beings and also serve as some sort of an alarm bell, in order that we may check our greed. Lynn appears to have been in a great hurry to complete this book and this immediacy is reflected in the way it has been written. And significantly, soon after the release of this book, a notice appeared in the media that Lynn Grabhorn had passed on.

This book, effectively delineates the classic fight between good and evil, with the good winning in the end. For those of us who feel unfairly treated by the world and who, in our agony, want to strip away the veil between us humans and the powers that be, in our fight for justice without actually taking out-and-out revenge, this book could be a beacon of hope, in that it validates the existence of an unseen force where the earthly struggles undergone by us have not been unregistered. That succour lies just around the corner and that we are loved beyond measure. One needs to hear these things sometimes. Especially if they are channeled, and coming from a higher source.

A book definitely reccommended to all readers inspired by the message of EMLIW.

A Very Detailed Mess!

Lynn Grabhorn attempts to convince us that there is another Earth which she names Planet Two, that exists simultaneously with Earth 1, but in another higher vibrational state. This other Earth is much like ours, but also very different. That's about all I want to say about her "theory". Reading this book was ponderous and infuriating! It's one detailed, but gigantic mess!! Most infuriating to me was her statement that certain animals that we eat on Earth 1 (I'm a Vegetarian) will still be consumed by humans on Earth 2, because these animals have collectively decided to serve man this way by allowing themselves to be mass-farmed, then cruelly suffer before being butchered and killed sometimes still alive, for mankind's consumption! Give me a break!! There are way too many other thoroughly insane statements, assumptions and conclusions that she draws in this bizarre book! Lynn should have stopped after she wrote her classic: "Excuse me, your Life is Waiting" which I wholeheartedly recommend. As for Planet Two? Avoid it like the plague!

Two good books and now out there...know what you are buying

Based on her two previous books "Beyond the Twelve Steps: Roadmap to a New Life" & "Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting" these were good books and fell within the bounds of my beliefs. But this book "Earth II" and the "Dear God! What's Happening to Us?: Halting Eons of Manipulation" Lynn has gone in a very different direction (or beyond what she hinted at previously). I am not saying the book is bad. I am just saying she has gone in a direction that is pretty far out there for me. So if you are buying the book based on the two previous ones I mentioned...you might want to reconsider or at least look for a used one on the cheap.

This is a quality program. It should be noted that the other review is a critique of the physical product that they received, not their experience with the audio program. This is a thorough analysis of Darwin's position in history, considering key thinkers related to his research (Mendel, Linnaeus, LeMarck, etc). I found the content comparable to "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin," which I also enjoyed. There is some depth in this work about the mechanics of evolutionary descent, but not as much as one might find in a fuller treatment on that topic. This is more of a biography than a textbook. -Ryan Mease

Another Roger Cliffe Hit

Most hobby books are generally very specific 'how-to' texts and devoid of organization, background and usually are either too basic or start at a level where some have to 'look up to see the bottom'. This book, like Cliffe's 'Table Saw Techniques' is so very well organized, that it is almost like a novel, with excellent transition between topics. The book starts with a review of the history of the Radial Arm Saw, what models are available today, operation, accessories, and very, very important SAFETY hints. The radial arm saw like many power tools is dangerous if used improperly. Cliffe gives an excellent treatment of safety measures, and techniques to work safely. For example, his treatment of the use of a moulding head, a procedure which many bulletin boards reflect fear or anecdotal horror stories is great...I read his hints and have successfully completed what many consider too 'hairy'. I'm a hobbyist not a cabinet maker. After the thorough treatise on the techniques, the book concludes with many detailed plans for woodworking projects. Well worth the investment and should be on your Christmas 'Wish List'. It was on mine a few years ago and my wife listened.

It has all kinds of interesting methods that I've never thought of before for making cuts. For the longest time, I thought the table saw could only do some cuts. This book definitely proves that wrong and shows the true versatility of the RAS

Dr. Ralph A. Weisheit is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Illinois State University. Weisheit has conducted extensive research on illicit drugs, rural crime, and rural justice, and is the author of eight books and numerous journal articles, book chapters, and solicited essays.

Dr. Frank Morn, Professor Emeritus at Illinois State University, is the author of a variety of textbooks on criminal justice and its history. Fantastic New German Reader Story

Caf� In Berlin is really one story broken into ten chapters, rather than ten short stories, as the subtitle says. I am a mid 40's male attempting to relearn and expand my high school German. Along with some audio language programs, I've found Andre Klein's various titles and this one I like the best. It's mostly present tense, and written in a simple first person narrator point of view. HIs Sicilian character tells you all you need to know about being a foreigner in modern Berlin, trying to learn the language, fit in, have a good time, get a job and meet some girls. It's not stretching any literary boundaries, but there is some humor tucked into the story. Vocabulary is simple, his end of chapter translations of key vocab are good checkpoints, and he has a knack for storytelling. For me, it all added up to a great reading experience, not taxing, not frustrating, just enough of a challenge. Everyone's experience will vary according to their mastery of the language, naturally, so I think it would be impossible to call it a one size fits all book. But if you're wanting a no sweat simple piece to test your abilities, I don't think you can wrong here.

Meaningful context, simple language

I have this on the Kindle. I was pleased at how the author had selected a sufficiently constrained vocabulary that I was able to understand almost everything.

Reading on the Kindle with a German dictionary installed makes it easy to look things up as you need, but a surprising amount becomes clear either from context, or from simply looking at the text. Many initially strange words turn out to be compound words which are understandable.

I have at best an A1 level of understanding, and the text worked for me.

A fun way to improve reading proficiency in German

Improving one's reading proficiency in a foreign language can be tedious if it requires looking up words in a dictionary, even online. One solution is a bilingual book, of which there are now some good examples, like Alice in Wonderland with sentences or phrases alternating between German and English. This book takes a different approach, also successful, in my opinion. It contains ten short chapters, each entirely in German. But harder words and phrases are in bold face and are translated at the end of each chapter. The story is entertaining, about a young man from Sicily living in Berlin with three roommates from different countries, and one can usually guess the meaning from context. I found that I absorbed new words without great effort. The level of German reading ability targeted is probably low intermediate.
