Wonderful book.

I bought this for my 90 year old father who has dementia. He loves looking and reading through it and has so far gotten hours of enjoyment from it. This book is beautiful and being National Geographic you know it is quality. I would recommend this book for seniors to engage their minds and interest. Father has taken to sitting it on his bed at night so he can glance at it.

Vaadin has become a great tool - one worth learning

I apologize that I am repeating this for all of the Vaadin books... these are good books to have if you use Vaadin, even if you take the training courses. Vaadin has become a great tool and it has a lot of features, not all of which you would discover without training, reading or browsing the API docs. And there are a lot of right ways and not-so-right ways to use Vaadin. You don't want to use Vaadin the "wrong" way. Use it right, and it pays off.

Good Beginner's Introduction to the Vaadin 7 Toolkit

Learning Vaadin 7 aims to give developers who want to get started with Vaadin a guideline for taking their first steps with the framework. It is not the author's intention to provide a deep insight into all the gory details of Vaadin, so it stays introductory in most of the examined topics. The framework's core principles, like data binding, event handling, navigation etc., are described in more detail, so as to provide a good understanding of these important concepts. Other topics are introduced and described in a shorter way such that the reader will get a good first grasp of these concepts and can get started using them right away. Along the way, a lot of useful tips and tricks are interspersed in side notes.

Even though Vaadin is primarily a UI-centric framework for creating web applications, the book does not get lost in describing the details of Vaadin's numerous UI components. Only the most important components such as Table, Tree, ComboBox, TextField or some of the layout components are described in such a way that you are able to understand how they work in principle. If you want to know more about the specifics of these and other components you have to consult additional reference material.

The Vaadin Toolkit comes with an insightful and comprehensive free reference book, the Book of Vaadin. Why should I spend money on this additional book Learning Vaadin 7 and is it worth its money? In my opinion it is. The Book of Vaadin gives quite a detailed description of most of the framework's aspects, but it stays focused on the framework itself. By that, with the Book of Vaadin you'd have to cover a lot of ground in order to get started with Vaadin.

Learning Vaadin 7 uses a different approach. It aims to cover Vaadin as one of the core tools for writing an enterprise application. Hence, it doesn't stop at describing the framework's principles but goes beyond that. You will also get an introduction to related technologies and tools that you'll typically encounter when writing anything other than the most simple Vaadin application. In particular, you'll learn about how to setup your development environment for Vaadin (using Eclipse and IntelliJ), using Maven for your Vaadin projects, Vaadin in a portal server, running Vaadin in the cloud, Vaadin and CDI, Vaadin and OSGi, writing your own custom components, server push, and so on.

In summary, Learning Vaadin 7 gives you a broader view on application development with Vaadin than the Book of Vaadin at the cost of detailedness.

Although Learning Vaadin 7 covers a lot of ground, there are still topics which are completely left out of the book or are only introduced concisely. Specifically, creating themes and Vaadin's commercial addons, such as TouchKit, TestBench, or Vaadin Charts, are not covered in the book at all. Vaadin's drag and drop feature is only briefly mentioned and described in a cursory way.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take his or her first steps with the Vaadin framework and to get a first solid overview of the framework's features. Of course, since the book should first and foremost be seen as an introductory work, my advice to developers is to subsequently deepen their Vaadin knowledge with further readings, such as the Book of Vaadin and other Vaadin books available by the same or other publishers.

Latest Vaadin 7 different from some of what the book teaches

It seems like since this book was written, a lot has changed in the Vaadin 7 API. You will have some trouble reconciling examples given in the book (some classes are no longer valid, or things are no longer done that way) with the sample code on GitHub. It became frustrating after a while. In short, the book is dated: you'll do best to have read through the Book of Vaadin 7 first, to be able to make the necessary adjustments while studying material from this book.

Update for use on Windows 8.1 ASAP!!!!!

Can only access the kindle version via my android phone (HTC One [older version]) or my android tablet (which doesn't charge/hold a charge any longer.) Cannot use it on the device I would prefer to use it on, which is my touch screen laptop that has Windows 8.1 installed. This is not a very good thing for amazon to do, considering most people who get a kindle text book use it on their computers in class, and most of those are either using Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. Unsure if Mac users have the same issue (I do not use Apple products at all).

PS Also cannot get access to it on my actual Kindle device, what is up with that?!?!

About the Author

Wilda Rinehart Gardner received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. After working as a staff nurse and charge� nurse, she became a public health nurse and served in that capacity for a number of years. In 1975, she received her nurse practitioner certification in the area of obstetrics-gynecology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1979, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In 1980, she completed her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the same university and accepted a faculty position at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where she taught medical-surgical nursing and maternal-newborn nursing. In 1982, she founded Rinehart and Associates Nursing Consultants. For the past 26 years, she and her associates have worked with nursing graduates and schools of nursing to assist graduates to pass the National Council Licensure Exam for Nursing. She has also worked as a curriculum consultant with faculty to improve test construction. Ms. Rinehart has served as a convention speaker throughout the southeastern United States and as a reviewer of medical-surgical and obstetric texts. She has co-authored materials used in seminars presented by Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review.

Dr. Diann Sloan received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Mississippi, and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In addition to her nursing degrees, she holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education, with minors in both Psychology and Educational Psychology, from Mississippi State University. She has completed additional graduate studies in healthcare administration at Western New England College and the University of Mississippi. Dr. Sloan has taught pediatric nursing, psychiatric mental health nursing, and medical-surgical nursing in both associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs. As a member of Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review, Dr. Sloan has conducted test construction workshops for faculty and nursing review seminars for both registered and practical nurse graduates. She has co-authored materials used in the item-writing workshops for nursing faculty and Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society.

Clara Hurd received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi (1975). Her experiences in nursing are clinically based, having served as a staff nurse in medical-surgical nursing. She has worked as an oncology, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, and pediatric nurse. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Ms. Hurd is a certified nurse educator. She currently serves as a nurse educator consultant and an independent contractor. Ms. Hurd has taught in both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. She was a faculty member of Mississippi University for Women; Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee; Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee; and Northeast Mississippi Community College. Ms. Hurd joined Rinehart and Associates in 1993. She has worked with students in preparing for the National Council Licensure Exam and with faculty as a consultant in writing test items. Ms. Hurd has also been a presenter at nursing conventions on various topics, including itemwriting� for nursing faculty. Her primary professional goal is to prepare the student and graduatefor excellence in the delivery of healthcare.

I passed my NCLEX

I did very well in class, but this book filled in a lot of gaps in certain subjects. This is the comprehensive version but it isn't so detailed that it makes you feel like you're just going through your nursing textbook again. I felt as though it had just the right information to help me link disorder with diagnostic with treatments/medications. The CD that comes with the book has a good system to help you learn why you're answering question wrong or right. I'd recommend this book for sure, just read it before doing the CD, I did it backwards and it made the CD much harder... I passed my NCLEX in 85 questions in little over an hour.

Highly Recommend--It's like Cliff-notes for NCLEX-PN

I initially tried the kindle sample for this book after seeing a fellow classmate with it. I was on the fence about whether to buy it because my NCLEX-PN date was quickly approaching. After reading the sample, I decided that it would be worth purchasing, and that I would buy it in the book format so that it was easier to do the questions at the end of the chapters and the practice quizzes. I purchased it on 1/5/15 and was scheduled to take the boards on 1/24/15. I highly recommend this book! It's like the cliff notes version of what you need to know for the boards. The book said to allow for at least 2 weeks to study, which I did. I tried to do a chapter a night for review, but sometimes did more since some chapters are shorter than others. The tear out sheet was also helpful for last minute reviews as I was waiting to take the boards. I passed the NCLEX on my first try with 85 questions (which is the minimum number of questions). I will be purchasing the NCLEX-RN when I am ready to take those boards.

I brought this book 8/31/14 the book came early .... I studying the day I recieve it which was 9/3/14...this book fit perfectly in my purse it went everywhere with me, I took my Nclex-pn on 11/21/14 and passed. This book has great tips it get to the point and gives great break down on symptoms of diseases, labs, and treatments. It comes with a whole bunch of questions I like their practice questions because in some of the other nclex books/cd-rom the same questions are repeated over and over again and you start to memorize them instead of learning why this is the rational.

A 2015 Running Press release, Theobald's book divides its material into chapters on Technology and Games, Fashion Victims, Feats of Strength, Mind Games, That's Entertainment, Unwanted Records, Acquired Tastes, etc.

About the Author

Robert E. Owens, Jr. Ph.D. (“Dr. Bob”) is an Associate Professor at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and a New York State Distinguished Teaching Professor. He teaches courses in language development and language disorders and is the author of several books including the following Pearson texts:

His Language Development text is the most widely used in the world and has been translated into Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. A Functional Approach Just Makes Sense

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing speech language pathologists when working with their clients is getting them to generalize the newly-learned language targets to novel contexts. After all, what good is speech-language therapy if the client does not use the skills outside of the therapy room?
Dr. Owens' book, Language Disorders: A Functional Approach to Assessment and Intervention, addresses this issue in great depth. The book shows how a conversationally-based, client-centered approach to assessment and intervention will greatly increase the likelihood of generalization. It also shows how the traditional approach of teaching language targets separately and out of context may not be the best method to achieve generalization. The book stresses, rather, to assess and train language where it will be used: in conversation. Owens also discusses at length the assessment and intervention of culturally and linguistically diverse children.
One major point made in the book early-on regarding intervention is the idea of making a plan for generalization when picking language targets, before therapy begins. So often SLPs make the mistake of addressing generalization toward the end of intervention, resulting in the SLP choosing inappropriate targets and/or the client showing a lack of carryover to novel contexts.
Owens also includes numerous guidelines and procedures that could be especially helpful for the school-based clinician. The appendices in the book are exceptional. Most impressive is Owens' extensive index of preschool literature, complete with suggested targets for remediation for each story. Also, a detailed table of language targets accompanied by functional activities for each is provided. This book is a valuable tool for anyone who works with individuals with language disorders or language differences.

I can't get over the errors

This is the worst textbook I have ever read, and I've been taking classes in a variety of subjects for the past 15 years. There are countless spelling errors, atrocious grammatical mistakes, references to tables that do not exist in the book, and a seemingly endless supply of redundant anecdotes. There is very little logical structure, making it extremely difficult to tell that there are, in fact, some very good ideas about clinical assessment and intervention hidden beneath all the poor writing. If only someone had read the book before it was published.

My current favorite mistake: "It's a bicycle; you ride on it by peddling."

I'm sorry if you have any love for the English language and are required to read this book. I'll be done with it after tomorrow, and it will take all of my remaining strength to sell it for the benefit of some other poor slob (and the environment) rather than burn it page by page as it deserves.

Robert E. Owens, Jr., you should be ashamed of yourself. I only hope this is not the language you're teaching those poor children with LI.

Great concepts, atrocious editing.

The functional approach to language intervention is great, but Pearson obviously didn't have anyone proofread this before it went to print. Mistake after mistake including spelling errors, punctuation errors and the worst: barely intelligible sentences that leave me agonizing to figure out what Owens is trying to say. This is the kind of book that makes me think I should go into editing. Seriously Pearson, send me your books and I'll give you a deal for the service. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK NEW. We do not need to encourage further printing of this garbage. Pearson: please make the effort to put out a good product before charging exorbitant amounts for it.

Do Not Buy, Save Your Money

Don't waste your money. Use it instead for a good tax accountant that has the proper licensing for dealing with the IRS for you that comes highly recommended or a tax lawyer(which is more expensive). The IRS agent I've dealt with was arrogant and believed he was/is above the law regardless of what anybody might tell, they pretty much are. They first agent you see face to face has all the power and all the cards. If you piss them off for ANY reason, they can and will make your life a living hell. You ARE guilty until you PROVE yourself innocent, regardless of what the law may state these are the real world facts. The IRS agent said to me: "I wouldn't be here if you were innocent". Thankfully it was the H&R Block tax software that had made multiple mistakes by purposely putting some deductions in 2 or more places which flagged me as double dipping. My excellent tax accountant new EXACTLY where it happened as soon as I told her what tax software I used. If I had followed some of the suggestions in this book I would have been severely screwed. False confidence in dealing with the IRS is a HUGE mistake.
