She was a delinquent teenager, mixed up with crime and drugs. In the 1970s, Star Parker came to Los Angeles with a dream of dancing on Soul Train -- and ended up an unemployed single mom, barely literate, and living on welfare. But life on county aid was far from impoverished -- she was able to lounge in her own jacuzzi, party at Venice Beach, bring in extra income with under-the-table jobs, and take the system for all it was worth.
It was the power of Christianity that turned her life around. But it was Star's no-excuses attitude of self-empowerment that firmly positioned her on the fast track of conservative politics, speaking out against welfare as the cause of urban America's moral and economic decline -- and in favor of taxpayer vouchers for private school education, banning abortion, and condemning condom distribution in public schools. Guided by her faith, Star has broken the "code of silence" among blacks to speak out on:
Affirmative action: "What we haven't told our people is that they can start their own businesses. Entrepreneurship works for everybody."
Equal opportunity: "Capitalism doesn't have any racial boundaries."
The death penalty: "How many murders do we have to read about before we get serious?"
Black rage: "Blacks cannot cry racism every time something doesn't go their way."
The Los Angeles riots: "After three decades of handouts...they had evolved into a group of government-dependent, out-of-control, racist monsters."
Liberalism: "White liberals are afraid. That monster they created in their socialist lab has gone crazy on them....Their liberalism has backfired."

About the Author
Star Parkeris president and founder of the Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), a nonprofit center that addresses the impact of social politics on America's inner cities and the poor. Prior to her social activism, Parker was a single welfare mother. After turning to Christ, she returned to college, earning her B.S. degree, and then launched an urban Christian magazine. A Must for Avid Readers

Very rarely do we open our souls to strangers,but Mrs. Parker has done it and done it beautifully. As a Black man who has livied his entire lifein the Black Community, I can relate to what Mrs. Parker speaks about in her book. Her comments about our Welfare System are right on the money, it makes people LAZY! Sometimes we as Black folk hate when we are confronted with the truth,but while reading this book I'm sure a lot of readers will recognize a lot of people. Like we like to say,"Don't hate the player, hate the game." in other words we all make dumb mistakes. And most of them are made when we're young. I recommend this book highly, especially for young women who think Welfare is the subsitute for your childs father. After trying everything the Devil had to offer, Mrs. Parker found out that Our Lord Jesus Christ is the true ANSWER! To my young sisters buy this book and read it carefully and openly, to my young brothers. Take care of what you lay down and concieve. Remember children do not ask to come here! An awesome book from an awesome lady!!!

I had the privalege of seeing Star Parker speak and then meet her at the Young America's Freedom Conference in San Diego. Her speech, much like her book, was awe-inspiring and wonderful as she tells of her dependancy on the government to living the American dream with house, family, business and God. This book shows what needs to happen in America, yet also warns conservatives of what we need to do to prosper. A must read for any American.

Insightful approach to save conservative ideals

Star Parker is a invigorating paragon of the conservative movement. Her spirit shows in her wonderful book. She not only gave an account of her welfare life but many of her friends, and it became obvious to me how the system has failed for many years now. She also mentioned the way liberals have only helped the welfare problem by handing out money, decreasing the insentive of people to work. She is a sole believer that we are all Americans regardless of race and should be treated that way. Racism has gone both ways and needs to be stopped. Her ideas are so simple regarding race problems, welfare, etc. I definitely recommend this book not only to learn a bit more about the welfare system but to be reinvigorated in the conservative movement.
