About the Author
Kathleen Dean Moore lives in Oregon, at the confluence of two rivers, and, during the summer months, she resides in a little cabin at the edge of a southeast Alaskan inlet. As an essayist, activist, and professor, she brings together natural history, philosophical ideas, and creative expression in a search for loving ways to live on the earth. She has published three books of personal essays about living in the lively places where water meets land: Riverwalking, Holdfast, and The Pine Island Paradox. Her essays can be found in many journals, including Audubon, Discover, Orion, and the New York Times Magazine. Moore is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Oregon State, where she teaches courses on environmental thought and ethics. She is also the cofounder and director of Oregon State’s Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word.

Navigating the Flow From Grief to Gladness

I have to confess up front: I was afraid to read this book. Not because I don't know and love Moore's thinking and writing; I do. Her essay, "Testimony of the Marsh," from her book Holdfast is one of my favorites ever. I teach it in my creative writing workshops as an example of how to use lyrical nature writing to reveal truths at the heart of life. So I picked up Wild Comfort in delighted anticipation, until I read this in her introduction:

I had set out to write a different book. I had begun to write about happiness... But events overtook me. I guess that's how I'll say it. That autumn, events overtook me, death after death, and my life became an experiment in sadness.

I couldn't read more. I closed the book. For the past eight months, since my husband began seeing birds and was eventually diagnosed with brain cancer, my life has been an experiment in sustaining courage and balance. I didn't want to read about grief, sadness or any of their relatives. I wanted that book on what makes a person happy.

A few days later, I picked up Wild Comfort again. And reading on, I drank it in like a healing draught, like the smell of rain bringing life to my drought-stricken desert valley. This slender collection of essays moves as powerfully and inevitably as a tide, inching in, rising ever-so-slowly under me, until I am buoyed by the strength and truth that flow through Moore's words. It is like the sun shining through a gap in the clouds, spotlighting the exact place that makes us stop and stare, overcome with awe at how beautiful life is. Wild Comfort may be rooted in grief, in loss, in darkness, but Moore's words carry us inexorably toward light and hope.

I could quote an insightful passage from every essay, but here's the paragraph from the beginning of the book that hooked me:

Late on the night when I finished this book, I felt my way to the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Clouds obscured the moon. I could hear the shifting of the dark sea but could only imagine the surge and ebb of its rim on the sand. Then the clouds slid out from under the moon. The advancing edge of waves gathered moonlight and pushed it toward land. The line of light wavered there, shaking in the wind, then slid out to sea. And so it was, up and down the beach, a rim of light riding in on the swash and slipping back into the night. I was happy then, standing in the surge with lines of moonlight catching on my rubber boots. This is something that needs explaining, how light emerges from darkness, how comfort wells up from sorrow. The Earth holds every possibility inside it, and the mystery of transformation, one thing into another. This is the wildest comfort.

Lyrical, Lively, and Lovely

Wild Comfort: The Solace of Nature reflects moments and experiences in the author's life in the wild through lucid, poetic descriptions that comfortably sway between the most minute details and broad universal truths. Her attentiveness to the facts of the moment at hand is keen, while her thoughts in understanding them may be scientific, ethical, or purely exhilarating...and sometimes all of these. Her appreciation and gratitude for the wild are genuine and contagious. She is a full participant...physical, emotional, and in her own way, spiritual...in the experiences she describes, never a bystander to them or an objective academic, although her credentials in philosophy invariably enrich her perceptions.

Moore turns to nature to nimbly and wisely yet subtly face with grace the loss of family members and friends, making choices, dealing with the complexities of modern life, and having patience, among other things. She offers lessons for us in how a heron eats, in a possum in a plum tree, in turning stones, and in a broken sun, reflecting that "[t]here is a wild comfort in the cycles and the intersecting circles, the rotations and revolutions, the growing and ebbing of this beautiful and strangely trustworthy world."

The impact of this book has been to revitalize (once again, for it is a neverending process) my own senses and mind in savoring how human life is inevitably interlaced with the wild, and that embracing and exploring that fact can only bring us closer to understanding what is true and real in both this instant and the timeless universe.

A Good Book for City People

As someone whose contact to nature is seeing a squirrel, oh, a couple of times a month, I can confirm that Wild Comfort opens the urban reader up to a new and wonderful world. Moore is an absolutely exquisite observer of not just creatures and plants but the sky and seas, too. (And she's not squeamish; the opening essay on snakes attests to that.) I respected the author's physicality--kayaking, a nightime hike as a heavy fog rolls in, snow-shoeing in the forest. And, as the title suggests, how she connects events of the (non-human) natural world to cycles and events of her life is most touching and wise. Yes, sometimes there's a touch of piety, and maybe the book didn't need quite so many lists of unheard of (to me) animals and plants--hip-snaps and green wittles (OK, I made those two up). Ah, and lichen apparently is a large part of the world outside of cities. Seriously, though, these were very touching essays and I'm very inclined toward going back and reading her other books.

About the Author
John L. Stanizzi is the author of the chapbook Windows. His full length collections are Ecstasy Among Ghosts, Sleepwalking, Dance Against the Wall, and After the Bell. His poems have appeared in Prairie Schooner, The New York Quarterly, Tar River Poetry, Rattle, Passages North, The Spoon River Quarterly, Poet Lore, The Connecticut River Review, Freshwater, and many other publications. Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize, in 1998 Stanizzi was named The New England Poet of the Year by The New England Association of Teachers of English. John has been a judge for the Connecticut Poetry Out Loud Program, the 2011 Connecticut Book Award for Poetry, and the Sunken Garden Poetry Award for Adult Writers. He is the coordinator for Hill-Stead Museum’s Fresh Voices Poetry Competition for high school poets. He taught for many years at Bacon Academy where he also directed the theater program. He has read at many venues throughout Connecticut, including The Sunken Garden Poetry Festival, RJ Julia Booksellers, and the Arts Caf� Mystic. A great addition to my poetry shelf

John L. Stanizzi's Hallelujah Time is a religious and cultural blend of lyricism and beauty. It takes the Rastafarian mindset and weaves it into the poet's life experience. It unfurls Biblical parallels between the story of God and Christ with the loving words, lyrics and lifestyle of Bob Marley. He explores sadness and loss in poems such as Pass it On and Guiltiness where he takes on the subjects of suffering and death and fills them with promise and hope. In Exodus, he describes the exodus of fall and likens the coming of winter to "...the cold coming in, a frigid white horse." Beautiful! This is a poetic mix of secular and spiritual, living and dying, past and present, and it works brilliantly. It is one I will revisit frequently. Can't wait to read more from John L. Stanizzi.

Newcomer Kid Gullet challenges his title, all the while hilariously dissing Angelo with his Mohammed Ali-like banter. Beat is a lyrical satire in which a young man travels to Long Island at Christmastime, 1957, to meet his idol, Jack Kerouac, in what becomes a true-to-form hedonistic weekend with the writer and his Beat colleagues. The Love of My Life is a heartbreaking story of two young lovers, who find their world shattered when China becomes pregnant, and the pair tries to deliver the baby themselves in a motel room. Other notable stories are Achates McNeil, in which a dead-beat novelist father visits his son's college as a guest speaker, and 56-0, a linebacker's desperate-but-witty attempt to find a life lesson in continuous defeat. Boyle's stories are short but often challenging in their nuances, and therefore are not recommended for reluctant readers. Boyle's fiction is well-suited to older teens able to handle the sometimes raw, graphic subject matter. Many of the characters are young adults, and Boyle perfectly echoes an adolescent voice in unsparing, often hilarious observations (one college student notes that his middle-aged father's eyes appear to have been "sucked down . . . volcanoes of wrinkles"). There are absurd, satiric twists of reality (a hit man's permanent hood keeps him in constant shadow) and some shocking scenarios. In "Love of My Life," for example, two teens abandon their newborn baby in a dumpster. Teens may already know "Greasy Lake," a widely anthologized story of pranks and excess gone wrong, and students who have read George Orwell's essays will find contemporary parallels in "Almost Shooting an Elephant." Whether the characters are confronting sex with the wrong person, the desire for fame, or an egotistical parent, their uncomfortable, sharply authentic stories will speak directly to many readers. Eccentric, witty, and delightful stories aimed for a younger audience

New York Times bestselling author T.C. Boyle is known for his outrageous wit and cadenced writing style, with many of his sentences jumping off the page like lyrics to a jingle or the syrupy smooth notes to a song. His novels for adults (DROP CITY, THE TORTILLA CURTAIN and THE INNER CIRCLE, to name a few) and various short story collections (including TOOTH AND CLAW, AFTER THE PLAGUE and DESCENT OF MAN) have garnered much critical acclaim and amassed quite a cult following among the literati. Thankfully, the smattering of stories compiled over the last 25 years that make up THE HUMAN FLY AND OTHER STORIES are now available so that younger readers can go batty over Boyle's gift for storytelling just as much as adults do.

The stories in THE HUMAN FLY range from giggle-inducing outlandish to tear-jerking poignant. From a story about losing a football match ("56-0") to a glimpse into the life of a man who chases after fame by courting death doing daredevil stunts ("The Human Fly") to a record-setting tale of two men battling it out in gargantuan eat-a-thon contests (The Champ"), the choices in this collection offer a little something for everyone --- and every mood. Unlike other anthologies on the shelves, Boyle's stories are consistently enjoyable and well-written, with characters who snap to life as though they're sitting right next to you.

A few stories that stand out above the rest:

"The Fog Man" and "Beat" poke fun at adolescence, each in their own way --- suburban youth in "The Fog Man" and hipped-out counterculture in "Beat." Teens will especially like "Beat" for its Kerouacian feel and subject matter (the story is set in Jack's mom's house; William Burroughs, Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg all make their own riotous cameo appearances). Begging to be read aloud, this story sings with attitude, charm, and raucous, bee-bopped rhythm throughout.

"Juliana Cloth" and the O. Henry Award-winning "The Love of My Life" (which also ran in The New Yorker a few years ago) are surprisingly hard-hitting and should give the more mature readers pause to think about the consequences of their actions. "Juliana Cloth" addresses AIDS in a tribal village and one girl's urge to have sex, despite the consequences. "The Love of My Life" is based on a story in the news about a young couple who abandons their baby in a dumpster --- Boyle reveals both the incessant love and na�ve stupidity behind their actions. Expect lasting impressions from these two tales.

Also included in the collection is an Afterword --- an explanation, of sorts, of what Boyle himself intended when writing these stories. Some purists might feel that knowing "the inside scoop" ruins the magic, but others (including teachers who might use the book as a reading assignment for class) will appreciate having access to Boyle's brain and writing process.

Without a doubt, THE HUMAN FLY AND OTHER STORIES will both delight and tickle youngsters for its content and its sassy, "Looney Tunes" style. So, too, will burgeoning writers appreciate Boyle's change in voice over the years and learn from his willingness to tackle a variety of topics, paces and techniques.

A reasonable selection of short stories. It's not my favorite collection, but the stories are intriguing. I have used a few for my 10th graders. They enjoyed them.

He guides the reader through the whole text passage by passage, showing how every part of it makes sense in the light of what has gone before, as well as indicating problems in Aristotle's argument.


No knowledge of Greek is required. When the argument does depend on the precise wording of the Greek text, translations and explanatory notes are provided, and there is a glossary of Greek terms. Sparshott offers insightful and useful criticism, making Taking Life Seriously the best available companion to a first reading of the Ethics.

Erudite, Gripping and Fresh Interpretation of Aristotle.

Francis Sparshott is an excellent poet as well as an excellent philosopher, and his command of language and his depth of insight are both highly manifest in this book. Sparshott has given here the best modern overall commentary on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, itself possibly the greatest of Aristotle's works. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle brings the perspective of a great observational biologist to bear on the observation of the human, in order to assess what our natural needs and capacities are, and what we need to do in order to have a fulfilling life. Aristotle's answer is, of course, subtle and complex, but it is summed up in Sparshott's title: we need to take our lives seriously. Sparshott's text demonstrates at every point the depth of insight developed over decades of thinking along with Aristotle (and, of course, along with lots of other philosophers) about these issues of human life. The result is a book that is simultaneously *brilliant* in its bringing together of Aristotle's texts and profound in its commentary on human experience. The first 50 pages are the most mind-blowing, and they should be read carefully by all students of Aristotle, to be sure, and by anybody else studying philosophy. Whenever I teach graduate courses in Aristotle, I assign this book as a companion text, because, (whereas I find that commentaries usually have the effect of lowering the level of initiative that the students take in studying the original books), this book always leads the students to be more probing and more thoughtful in their approach to Aristotle's texts. I recommend it very highly.

About the Author

Traci Mann, Ph.D. , is professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota and is an expert on the psychology of eating, dieting, and self-control. She was a tenured professor at UCLA before moving to the University of Minnesota, where she founded the Health and Eating Lab. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA). She lives with her husband, University of Minnesota professor of psychology Stephen Engel, and their two sons in Edina, Minnesota.

Fascinating account of why diets fail and how fear of obesity is making things even worse

This is a very well written and uniquely informative book in a field glutted with opinions and weak and conflicting advice. It is not a how-to book on losing weight, although it has a few solid behavioral suggestions for making modest healthy changes. This is primarily an interpretation of much of the available evidence regarding obesity and health by psychologist who runs an eating lab at the University of Minnesota and publishes a lot of scholarly peer reviewed work in the field.

Although she is a researcher, Dr. Mann takes pains to distinguish herself from obesity researchers with a public health focus who are motivated to warn people about the dangers of increasing body fat. Her interpretation of the data is often the opposite in some ways from theirs, she sees the growing incidence of body fat and she sees the growing incidence of adult onset diabetes, but she reports that the link between body fat and health problems is far weaker than is implied by the rhetoric of most obesity researchers and much weaker than the popular impression has become. In addition, our efforts to fight obesity have, she concludes, actually become counter-productive because of the manner in which we typically attempt to fight our own biology by restricting calories and exercising in ways that increase our stresses and increase our preoccupation with food, and that both of these things feed back into exacerbating the original problem.

The book starts off ripping into both the commercial diet industry and the focus of a lot of articles by doctors and obesity researchers by announcing that their "3 pillars" are all simply false:

1. That some diets work for losing weight
2. That some diets are healthy for losing weight
3. That obesity itself is deadly

Among the central and most compelling aspects of this book is where Mann observes that our ideal body image often tends to be outside of the range that we can reasonably sustain. And this becomes confused with health concerns and fed by commercial interests. We could transform our bodies potentially through diet and exercise, but at the cost of altering or entire lives in the service of that goal and experiencing extended self-denial and obsession with food.

And the clincher for her argument is that all this self-denial and obsession would be mostly serving our aesthetic ideal rather than actually improving health. She finds that according to best available evidence upon close inspection mortality is not significantly improved by losing weight, unless you are already extremely obese and still have a long life ahead of you. The population in that category is far smaller than the one targeted by both the diet and fitness industries and most obesity researchers.

Mann finds that diets consistently fail in two ways: (1) only a tiny percentage of dieters retain their weight loss, regardless of which diet it is, and (2) even when people lose enough weight to satisfy the goals of improving their risk profile, they rarely lose enough to satisfy their aesthetic preference. This means that according to the person themselves, their diet failed even when for health purposes it succeeds. Our aesthetic goals trump our health goals for the purpose of satisfaction with the diet.

If we should want to attempt small changes that help us regulate our own eating so we can maintain a sustainably lower body weight, Mann offers several well-tested behavioral suggestions along the lines of "nudges" that help us avoid being triggered to eat excessively.

I think her principles seem sound and her use of evidence is compelling. I would say that anyone who wants to lose a few pounds permanently would probably benefit from the sort of cognitive-behavioral suggestions Mann gives in her book.

I do have a criticism of her otherwise superb and unique exposition though.

She argues for a set point model of body weight regulation that maintains our weight within a fairly narrow range but she doesn't really address the obvious question of why people are statistically getting fatter if we are so consistent at maintaining our weight in such a narrow range. She puts most of her focus on obesity not being as deadly as it appears except at the extreme, and she explains why people can't simply diet away unwanted body fat, but she doesn't at all dive into the reasons for our growing bodies.

That's a big topic and it isn't her area of research so I can understand leaving it to others to try to explain, but for me it left a logical hole in her argument that begs to be filled and should have been addressed with at least some general thoughts. She should have touched on the moving of "settling points" that move somewhat rather than implying a single weight range exists for each person. Clearly that range shifts under different clusters of life conditions. That's not just important because we need to explain why we get fatter. It is also important because we need to explain the few outlier cases where people do successfully make the changes needed to lose very large amounts of weight and keep it off for years or decades. They are I think becoming different people in a sense, with different weight regulation settling points resulting from different activity patterns and eating habits and different environmental conditions. She doesn't really seem to allow for that at all. Her insistence that a "diet" doesn't allow for that may give a misleading impression that people _never_ successfully lose significant weight for the long term. That is clearly not true. Playing the odds is fine, and we need to be realistic about what is required, but knowing why the outliers succeed is important as well.

The reason she is right most of the time I think is that it is a lot more work than we expect to be able to do the experimentation and learning and self-observation needed to learn to avoid temptations and prepare our own food in a nutritious way and so on, and as she says, "diet" to most people means eating certain things, not engaging in a challenging ongoing learning process and strategically altering clusters of habits. If you expect to do that sort of thing, then I think it is entirely possible to shift from one "settling point" to another to lose a lot of weight over time and keep it off. She is right that if you do this kind of staged life adjustment to become very lean, you will have a much harder time maintaining it in general until it becomes a developmental change. She is right that this cannot possibly be done in most cases simply by acts of discipline. You have to become smart about it.

Sneaky Experiments & Pracitial Ideas From the Eating Lab

SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is a very unique book. I don't believe I've ever read a book on eating that is based upon research from an eating lab. The author conducted her experiments on eating in a pretty sneaky way: "I tell our research participants that we are studying other things entirely, such as their memory or their moods or how they communicate with their friends. But being the hospitable people we are, we just happen to offer them snacks while we study them. They have no idea that it's what they do with these snacks that were really studying. "Sneaky, sneaky!

The author admits she was very surprised by her findings: "Much to my surprise, I've learned that nearly everything I thought was true about eating was false. "Perhaps one of the most important conclusions of this book regards the failures of diets: "The most rigorous diet studies find that about half of dieters will weigh more for 25 years after the diet ends than they did before the diet began."

One of the big problems with diets is that diets cause stress. But a stress response itself is something that leads to weight gain! "Stress cannot be avoided when you are dieting because dieting itself causes stress. Dieting causes the stress response that has already been showed to lead to weight gain."

One of the recurring themes of SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is how realistic your weight goal is. Your realistic weight is highly correlated to the weight of your biological parents. She cites studies with twins who are living in separate homes. They discovered that the weight of the twins was very similar to each other, even though they had been raised in separate households.

The author estimates that your genes account for 70 percent of the variation in your weight. It's not that you can't affect your weight at all but that what you can change is probably a lot more limited than you think: "Your body is trying to keep you within that genetically determined set weight range."

The most controversial part of this book will certainly be Dr. Mann's assertions about obesity. She points out that the scientific evidence does not really support the idea that all obesity is unhealthy. The author cites a study which found that overweight people actually had a slightly lower risk of death than normal weight people. In fact, "being overweight appears to be even a bit healthier than being the recommended weight." The doctor clarifies that it's not slightly obese people that have the health risks--it's what are called "Class 3 Obesity." And only 6 percent of the US population is in that category.

A surprising finding from the author's research is what is called the "obesity paradox." This section of the book was a real eye opener for me. Here's the paradox: Obesity in America has greatly increased over the past few decades. One would think, therefore, that the rate of diabetes would have skyrocketed, but it has not. Dr. Mann points out that the prevalence of diabetes went from 9% to 11%, and that the rate of cardiovascular disease actually decreased.

Dr. Mann recommends that you aim for your lowest realistic weight--not some idealistic weight that is not actually attainable. Rather than going on and off diets, you exercise, eat nutritiously, avoid weight cycling, and get proper medical care. She gives lots of practical suggestions on how to do this. For example, remember that the actions of people around you do has a great impact on how you eat.

The author is a big proponent of regular exercise, even though it doesn't usually lead to big weight loss. The benefits of exercise are numerous, the author points out. Simply put, "Exercise prevents death," and exercise "works as well as drugs in preventing death among people with heart disease, stroke, or pre-diabetes." In addition, "Exercise helps even if you don't lose weight." Exercise also helps reduce stress. You really do feel better on a regimen of exercise.

The author has some final words for the reader in the section called "Final Words: Diet Schmiet." She really discourages the reader from trying to go on diets: "Diets don't work. Big deal. You don't need them to work. You need to not go on them." Instead, she suggests, "reach your leanest livable weight, that comfortable weight at the lower end of your set range. You'll have no trouble reaching it if you exercise regularly and use some of the smart regulation strategies in this book to create reasonable eating habits."

All in all, I found SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB to be a surprising book, with some very unusual conclusions. The author's experience and qualifications are solid, but this book is bound to be controversial, because it takes aim at some of the core assumptions in the health/diet world.

Outstanding with One Small Caveat

I like this book very much and strongly recommend the trigger management strategies. Dr. Mann has done extensive research into the role of food reminders and cues in our surroundings that direct our brains to choose unhealthy foods. I also advocate avoiding cues for processed foods as an effective and essential strategy for gaining control over eating in the intense obesogenic environments of westernized cultures. The book hits one strong well-supported note after another. It is encouraging to see so much solid research translated into easy-to-use strategies. I would recommend the book for the purpose of learning how to live in a westernized culture and protect against cravings triggers. It could make the difference between success and failure at improving eating behaviors.
The other thing I like about the book is that the trigger-avoidance advice is consistent with models that explain overeating as an addiction to processed foods. Drug and alcohol addicts are also advised to avoid people, places, and things associated with the use of addictive substances. Dr. Mann’s book supports the idea that for addictive processed foods, cue-avoidance is a much more complex task and she provides appropriately comprehensive strategies for accomplishing this. Such a high level of understanding is unusual and makes the book very worthwhile.
If you are recovering from addiction to processed foods, I would offer a word of caution. Research shows that even small amounts of processed foods can trigger the cravings associated with the addiction. So for food-addicted readers of this otherwise outstanding book, please don’t be persuaded that by following cue avoidance and a generally healthy diet, it could be safe to eat small quantities of addictive processed foods.
