Geoffrey Baker is the first to analyse in depth the articulation systems used in major projects undertaken by Stirling. He confirms that the Staatsgalerie complex at Stuttgart does not demonstrate Stirling's interest in post modernism but rather an enhanced sensitivity towards context informed by his growing allegiance to the classical canon. Baker explains how this important development in his work, powerfully influenced by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, is consummated in perhaps the finest of Stirling's uncompleted works, the extension to London's National Gallery. In a discussion of his mature works, Baker explains how Stirling's work can be understood in terms of several interconnected ideas. These include surrealism, historicism, myth and metaphor, inconsistency and ambiguity, bi-lateral symmetry, the garden, rusticity and arcadia, and the archetype, seen as the repository of the collective architectural memory. As well as discussing his interests and those who influenced Stirling, the book compares his oeuvre with that of the pioneers of modern architecture, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier. This book charts a remarkable career, and offers invaluable insights not only into the masterly, timeless architecture, but also into the man himself: charismatic, irreverent, courageous, serious; sometimes rude, often stubborn, belligerent, yet gentle. He was endlessly inventive and deeply dedicated to his art, producing buildings that reflect all of the above, buildings that are magnificent and ultimately humane.

This book is fair. Its strengths are the quantitiy of problems presented and the fact that the answers to nearly all the problems are in the back of the book. The diagrams to the problems are also very good. The weaknesses: presentation of the concepts is light. It is difficuly to build an intellectual understanding of the material from the reading. The "whys" are not explained. Methods are presented a la carte. This book desperately needs a solutions manual.

The book as a matter of fact covers all the basic subjects required for a future understanding of strength of materials. The explanations are quite long, and shorter sentences could have made it more attactive as an excellent text book. I do recommend it as a text book for a basic course.

This book is difficult to follow. The explanations and examples are not clear. It is bad enough that the problems are not clear cut. But it is even worse that a solution manual is not offered for this book.

The book contains solved examples in these areas and also flow diagrams which will help on one hand to understand the theory and on the other hand, it will help the simulation of large scale power systems on the digital computer. About the Author
L.P. Singh, was a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He obtained his Ph.D.degree in Electrical Engineering from I.I.T. Kanpur. Comprehensive

Ever wonder what those giant, confusing words on your dichotomous key mean? Look no further!
It is a very handy book to have if you do not have access to the internet while keying out a new insect. It is also handy if you are a beginner and have no idea what katepisternum (among many other words) means.

Good book if you want to have to look in only one place for your technical jargoning needs.

"A Dictionary of Entomology" - a poorly done entomological dictionary in the Kindle format

To test this very large dictionary I opened Physiologic Systems in Insects. This book is filled with complex words probably almost exclusively limited to entomologist. I used my 27" iMac 3.7 GHz with 8 GB RAM and an i7 core to look at both books side by side. I started at the beginning and looked up "autocrine". Nothing listed. I easily found this word in Webster's 3rd International Dictionary, Then I looked up "prothoracic" which to find I used the Search feature for the Dictionary of Entomology. To find it "easily" you have to wait while this huge dictionary is electronically indexed. The problem with this is that when it is done indexing it shows very place in the Dictionary where the word is used. This is a mixed blessing, since you sure can't do this with the hardbound version. Next, I did it the hard way by pushing the slider at the bottom of the screen and found there were several listings that used modified versions of the word prothoracic, but never just the word itself. I easily found the word and its meaning in the Webster's 3rd International Dictionary and the on-line Oxford English Dictionary.

Don't get me wrong, the Dictionary of Entomology is probably one of the most thorough and complete sources of entomological terms available. Unfortunately, I bought it in the Kindle format. It obviously was not designed with that in mind. So my suggestion is get an on-line subscription to either the Oxford English Dictionary or the the Webster's, and buy the Dictionary of Entomology in its hardbound version at a $127.30 and the Kindle version for a mere $120.94.
