Best of a weak list

I bought the recent edition (published December 2011) of this text. I had borrowed a friend's copy of the 1994 edition and, though it is far from a modern, useful language text, it is better any of its competition. Imagine my surprise to find that my "new" edition differs from my friend's only in its cover, the addition of a new fly leaf page with the word Vietnamese misspelled and the reverse of the title page now includes 2012. The rest is absolutely identical. So don't go searching for the new edition if you are hoping for an updated version - the 1994 version has simply been reproduced in identical, rather boring black and white.
I have lived in VN for more than four years and work there as an English language teacher. I have found the language difficult to learn but keep trying as I need to remind myself of the difficulty of what I ask of my students to do every day. I don't have much of "an ear" for languages and don't know how anyone can be expected to learn spoken Vietnamese without the assistance of some audio input but this book comes with no tapes or CD. My friend used hers in a class with a native Vietnamese speaker as her teacher. A common problem with other texts with CDs is that the CDs have been made from old audiotapes and are impossible to start and stop as required.
One strength of this title is that the authors do understand that to use a language a learner needs to know individual words - most Vietnamese texts give idiomatic translations so a learner has difficulty knowing how to use the words in proper context. Another strength is that the lessons are reasonably well graded. And there are useful charts to show sentence and grammatical structures which use a range of interchangeable adjectives or pronouns - as a language teacher I found these very helpful.
But there are criticisms too. The main one is that the book's dialogues are set overseas and feature Vietnamese speaking to other Vietnamese in Australia or USA. It reads almost as if the dialogues were devised from texts to help Vietnamese people living overseas to learn English. I am not sure why, living in Hue as I do, I might want to speak in Vietnamese about San Diego or Los Angeles or Melbourne. And why would I want to say to another Australian: You're an Australian, aren't you? in Vietnamese - I would ask in English. The book does not focus on learning Vietnamese because you are living in Viet Nam - rather it provides an ex-pat Vietnamese view of the language.
A good modern Vietnamese language text is sorely needed. This is not it. But it is the best I have found during a long and futile search. The problems for me are: first, that the text reflects the Confucian learning methods so common in VN rather than the modern communicative language teaching used throughout the English speaking world; and second, that the focus is not on learning Vietnamese so that you can function better in Viet Nam.

A reasonably good overview of the Northern VN dialect

A pretty good overview of the Northern dialect. The accompanying audiotapes are not very extensive or of particularly high quality

disappointing text

I found this text rather disappointing. My Vietnamese teachers, who are both Northern and Southern, pointed many flaws in the dialogues, mixing formal and informal idioms which is inappropriate, the use of idioms that no one else apparently has ever heard of, and a failure to cover important basics. We used the text, but it was really the skill of the teachers that made it workable. This text appears to be supported by various organizations, but I am not sure why, quality does not appear to be the reason.
I have since discovered Ngo's text, which seems much better.
